Growing up in a quaint town in northern Sardinia, how did your early environment shape your artistic inclinations and drive?
Ever since I was a kid, I felt I had something different from others – a unique vision of the world and a desire to stand out. Living in a small town helped me realize I didn’t want to blend in and that embracing my diversity was key. Watching my mother apply lipstick sparked my interest in makeup, allowing me to express the art I felt inside.
Transitioning from a professional dancer to a renowned hair and makeup artist is quite a journey. What pivotal moments or experiences led to this career shift?
Dance was my first love, and it took me from my small town to Milan at 18. When physical problems ended my dance career, I saw it as a sign from the universe. Both makeup and dance are art forms, and as a dancer, I was always fascinated by the makeup artists who brought characters to life. My passion for makeup emerged during this period of forced change, and it became a natural next step.
You’ve worked with an impressive roster of celebrities, including Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender. Can you share a standout moment or challenge you faced while collaborating with them?
Working with different celebrities is always a challenge because it involves not only your skills but also your personality. With Alicia Vikander, I recall a tense moment with the hairstylist, yet Alicia felt relaxed and at ease with me. Conveying serenity, even in tense moments, is one of the biggest challenges.
Milan Fashion Week is a pinnacle of the fashion world. How do you prepare for such high-stakes events, and what has been your most memorable fashion week experience?
I’ve had the chance to work at both Milan Fashion Week and high fashion events in Paris. These experiences are thrilling, offering the opportunity to collaborate with international designers and artists. My most memorable experience was being part of the team for the Dior show with Peter Philips.
Bollywood has its own unique glamour and style. How did your venture into this vibrant industry begin, and what distinctive elements do you bring to Bollywood makeup artistry?
My experience in India came during a period of change. Milan no longer stimulated me, and a friend helped me find an agency in Bollywood. Adapting my style to Indian cinema’s heavier makeup was a challenge, but it broadened my vision and allowed me to cater to different markets.
Navigating the diverse beauty standards across Milan, Dubai, and India must be fascinating. How do you stay adaptable and culturally aware in your artistic approach?
I always try to maintain my personal style while incorporating what I learn from different countries. My passion for light makeup remains, but I adapt to the preferences of the markets I work in.
What role do you believe makeup plays in the broader context of fashion and personal expression?
Makeup, like hairstyling and fashion, is crucial. A beautiful photo requires harmony among all these elements. Personally, makeup represents individual style and is more than just applying lipstick or contouring – it’s a reflection of one’s personality.
In the realm of makeup artistry, who are the visionaries or mentors that have significantly influenced your creative direction and techniques?
I follow many makeup artists to learn and expand my vision. Peter Philips and Charlotte Tilbury have always been significant influences for me.
The beauty industry is constantly evolving. What emerging trends or innovations excite you the most, and how do you envision your role in shaping the future of makeup artistry?
Keeping up with makeup trends is challenging with new techniques, products, and platforms like social media emerging constantly. I am excited by these innovations. As for my future, I’m still figuring out my direction, but I know something big is on the horizon.
With your extensive travels and varied experiences, are there any new destinations or groundbreaking projects on the horizon that you’re particularly eager to embark on?
I love traveling for work and crave new experiences. Japan, Korea, and Los Angeles are on my list of desired destinations. There are many projects I look forward to, and I believe everything will come in due time.
What advice would you give to aspiring makeup artists looking to break into the high-fashion and celebrity makeup scenes?
Don’t give up after early defeats – there’s always something new ahead. Dare to be different, be your own best PR, and maintain your humanity, as it truly makes a difference.
