Cartier Juste un Clou: the most iconic nail in the world

18.06.2025

There’s nothing extra in this design — just gold, a curve of metal, and flawless form. Cartier’s legendary Juste un Clou bracelet looks like a simple nail, but it costs over $10,000 and adorns the wrists of Jake Gyllenhaal, Kristen Stewart, Miley Cyrus, and countless anonymous royals.

Let’s rewind to 1970s New York — a time of Studio 54, pop art, and fierce competition among Cartier, Tiffany & Co., and Van Cleef & Arpels. Cartier needed not just another piece of jewelry — but a statement. Enter Aldo Cipullo: a young Italian designer with an unusual obsession with hardware stores. He saw beauty in screwdrivers, nuts, and nails — tools that embodied strength, form, and everyday functionality.

That inspiration gave birth to two of Cartier’s most iconic pieces: the Love bracelet and, of course, Juste un Clou. Cipullo turned an ordinary nail into an object of desire — minimal, ironic, luxurious. A metal line bent around the wrist, becoming art.

Yet even with such an avant-garde silhouette, the “nail” faded into the background for some time. Its revival came in 2012, with a full collection of rings and earrings joining the iconic bracelet. Since then, the Juste un Clou universe has expanded into dazzling diamond editions, rare metals, and even punk-inspired versions with spikes.

Juste un Clou isn’t just jewelry. It’s a manifesto. A statement piece. A reimagining of the everyday. Proof that even a nail can carry meaning — and make history.
