Tate Modern is celebrating a milestone — the London contemporary art museum turns 25 this year. Over the past quarter-century, the gallery has brought global attention to contemporary art through its unique approaches to artistic engagement. Here’s a closer look at how Tate Modern is marking its 25th anniversary:
From May 9 to 12, the museum is hosting a Birthday Weekender — a series of free events open to everyone. The programme includes workshops, film screenings, panel discussions, live music, guided tours, and tarot readings.
To mark the occasion, the gallery is offering free access to several of its exhibitions and interactive installations. These include Measuring the Universe by Roman Ondak, works from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Dorothea Tanning, Mark Rothko’s Seagram Murals, and more. In the Art and Religion room, visitors can receive personalized tarot readings with artist Meschac Gaba.
As part of the Birthday Weekender, the museum will host daytime and evening live music sessions featuring contemporary DJs. Headliners include Romy and Cultur FM.
In collaboration with Uniqlo, Tate Modern has also launched a cozy “gift shop” on the ground floor, where visitors can purchase souvenirs inspired by artworks in the gallery. The shop also offers daily workshops where guests can create custom prints on T-shirts or tote bags.
The programme also includes panel discussions with Gallery Director Karin Hindsbo, Chief Curator Catherine Wood, and guest artists.
