Dubai Museum of Modern Art (DUMA) makes its grand debut as the city’s latest cultural landmark

27.10.2025

Rising gracefully from the waters of Dubai Creek, DUMA (Dubai Museum of Modern Art) emerges as a luminous tribute to the city’s heritage. Inspired by the sea and the pearl, symbols deeply woven into Dubai’s story, the museum appears to float on water, shimmering like the precious gem it embodies. Inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, DUMA stands as both a cultural statement and an architectural marvel.

Developed by the Al-Futtaim Group and envisioned by the legendary Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the five-storey structure embodies Ando’s signature dialogue between nature, light, and geometry. The Pritzker Prize laureate, whose portfolio includes the Chichu Art Museum in Japan and the Bourse de Commerce in Paris, brings to Dubai a poetic balance of serenity and strength, echoing the rhythm of the sea that surrounds it.

Speaking about the inauguration, His Highness remarked, “Dubai has become a destination of choice for creatives from around the world, home to communities and industries working together to accelerate the growth of the creative economy. This new cultural landmark advances our strategic goal to position Dubai as a global hub for creativity and culture and cements its place on the modern art map.”

Anchored on its own island, DUMA unfolds across five stories of purpose and vision. The first and second floors are dedicated to exhibition galleries, while the third hosts a refined VIP lounge and restaurant overlooking the water. Beyond exhibitions, the museum will pulse with life, hosting art fairs, panel discussions, and educational programs that nurture dialogue and discovery. A library, study rooms, and artist training spaces will provide fertile ground for both emerging and established talents to evolve and experiment.

The curatorial focus rests on modern and contemporary artworks that mirror Dubai’s cultural diversity and its progressive creative spirit. In a city constantly redefining the limits of innovation, DUMA arrives as a radiant symbol of artistic ambition, placing Dubai firmly among the world’s most dynamic cultural destinations.

The opening of DUMA also joins a flourishing era for the UAE’s art scene. Earlier this year, TeamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi unveiled its breathtaking 17,000-square-metre sensory experience exploring the harmony between humans and nature. Soon, the long-awaited Zayed National Museum and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open their doors, marking a new chapter in the UAE’s artistic evolution, one that bridges heritage and modernity.
